On October 8 and 9, 2025, WPI-AIMEC cohosted a seminar on ocean science and climate, “UC San Diego Days: Thinking from the Ocean — Where Do We Come From, and Where Are We Going?”, with Toyota Konpon Research Institute in Nagoya, Aichi. At the seminar, Prof. Margaret Leinen and Prof. Shang-Ping Xie from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego gave keynote talks. On Day 1, WPI-AIMEC Director Toshio Suga served as a panelist, and WPI-AIMEC Vice Director Fumio Inagaki served as the facilitator. On Day 2, WPI-AIMEC researcher Dr.Namal Rathnayake (JAMSTEC) was a panelist, and Dr. Swadhin K. Behera (JAMSTEC) was the facilitator.

Over the two days, researchers from Japan and abroad, members of the Toyota Group, and WPI-AIMEC members (researchers and URA staffs) held active discussions on a wide range of topics, including the big picture of ocean science and the use of data and AI.

WPI-AIMEC will keep working with industry and academia to foster dialogue and to advance research and its application on marine ecosystem change.
