WPI-AIMEC Co-hosted “CMIP Community Workshop” on Climate Change Projection

The “CMIP Community Workshop” was held at the Kyoto International Conference Center from March 9 to 13, 2026, with over 400 researchers in the field of climate change prediction from around the world attending in person. Eight members of AIMEC participated.  During the opening plenary session, WPI-AIMEC Unit Leader, Dr. Michio Kawamiya (Principal Researcher, JAMSTEC), took the stage to highlight AIMEC’s activities (photo).

“CMIP” stands for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, an international initiative focused on climate change projections using coupled atmosphere-ocean simulation models. JAMSTEC, which co-hosts AIMEC, participates in CMIP. Research institutions around the world conduct climate change projections in accordance with the standard experimental protocol established by CMIP. These projection results will be incorporated into the Seventh Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), due in the first half of 2028. AIMEC, which has the understanding of the mechanisms underlying marine ecosystems’ responses to climate change and their projection as one of its core missions, is closely monitoring developments within CMIP.
