WPI‑AIMEC hosted the first ASPIRE Graduate Student Symposium on 28 February 2026 in a hybrid format from the Aobayama, Sendai office. Through JST-ASPIRE funding, WPI-AIMEC supports international research exchanges and training opportunities for early career researchers. At the symposium, all seven ASPIRE-selected graduate students presented their research and overseas visit plans to WPI‑AIMEC members and Tohoku University students.
The event introduced the ASPIRE Graduate Student Program to prospective applicants and provided a platform for current students to share their research progress. Presentations outlined scientific themes, research approaches and upcoming international collaboration plans conducted under the supervision of the ASPIRE overseas partner PIs.
Topics included marine heatwaves, biogeochemical variability, bio‑optical observations from BGC‑Argo floats, CO₂ flux dynamics, Central Mode Water processes and the responses of marine biological communities to environmental change. Each talk was followed by an active discussion, creating a collaborative atmosphere that encouraged scientific exchange and peer feedback.
The event strengthened connections between WPI‑AIMEC and Tohoku University’s graduate community and highlighted the importance of the ASPIRE Program in fostering internationally trained early‑career researchers. Through ASPIRE, WPI‑AIMEC continues to support the next generation of researchers working to understand marine ecosystem change.
