A special lecture titled “From Physical Chemist to Chief Scientist: Lessons from a Career in Science and Scientific Leadership” will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Science Hall, Science Complex C, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University.
Our guest speaker is Professor Tony Haymet, Chief Scientist of Australia. Beginning his career as a physical chemist and later serving as Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Professor Haymet has played leading roles in major international scientific initiatives, science-based policy advance, and efforts to translate research outcomes into societal impact and innovation.
Drawing on his own career and leadership experience, Professor Haymet will discuss how large-scale international scientific projects can be initiated and led across disciplines and institutions, and how scientific knowledge can be connected to policy, society, and innovation.
This lecture offers a valuable opportunity for researchers, faculty members, and students to learn from Professor Haymet’s experience and reflect on scientific career and leadership in an increasingly international and interdisciplinary research environment.
We warmly welcome those interested in international collaboration, the development and management of large-scale research programs, science-policy engagement, and translating research into societal impact and innovation.
